A Few Community Service Options
This is just an informational piece on community service. All I did was go through the student's organizations page and pick random clubs to highlight, I made little descriptions below the club name and website. I got this info from sites linked to http://osa.stanford.edu/studentgroups/vso062205t.shtml. Please go and check some of these out, they are all wonderful groups. It will only take a minute.
Alternative Spring Break: http://www.stanford.edu/group/ASB/asb_dev/index.htm
Applications for this open Oct. 25th, and are due by Nov. 9th. Trips are going to Hawai'i, New Mexico, the Capital, and Oregon this year. This is meant to allow students to become more aware of social issues through "service and immersion."
American Red Cross: http://www.stanford.edu/group/redcross/index.html
"ARCSU is dedicated to promoting CPR and First Aid training in the community, disaster awareness in the community and on campus, and supporting the Palo Alto Red Cross Chapter." Plus, on the website there is a volunteering page that is currently under construction.
Cirlce-K: http://www.stanford.edu/group/circle-k/
A few past projects include mentoring children in East Palo Alto, and serving in a Soup Kitchen in East Palo Alto. Sounds like the good deed of the day...
Project Dosti: http://dosti.stanford.edu/index2.html
If you are interested in service in India, this is the club for you. It is meant to promote individual growth through a better understanding of different cultures, and through "sustainable service."
East Palo Alto Tennis and Tutoring: http://epatt.stanford.edu/
Just as it says. If you don't play tennis, it is perfectly okay, and because you are here, you are a great tutor. So, go out, and make a difference in a child's life.
Henry's Place: http://www.stanford.edu/group/henrysplace/
Another of the many tutoring groups on campus. Always nice to help kids.
Kids With Dreams: http://www.stanford.edu/group/kwd/
You should all go to this website, just the picture alone is enough to make most cry. This is an organization that improves the lives of disabled children. They work with the physically and mentally disabled youth through local programs. Please check this one out!
Night Outreach: http://www.stanford.edu/group/nightoutreach/
This one is devoted to befriending and empowering the homeless community of Palo Alto.
Pacific Free Clinic: http://pacific.stanford.edu/home.html
Okay, this one is a little far, but still good. It is a student-run clinic that provides free health-care services to low-income families.
Stanford Project on Hunger(SPOON): http://hunger.stanford.edu/home.html
This group tries to eliminate food waste from Stanford Dinning Halls and gives the left-over food to local organizations. Yummy.
Volunteers In Latin America: http://www.stanford.edu/group/vila/
It raises awarness of issues in Latin America and promote cross-cultural exchanges there. There is definitely work to be done there.
GET out there, DO Community Service, and HAVE FUN!
